Combat Archery is allowed in specific melee competitions.
Crossbows and traditional bows rated at 50 lbs or less are allowed. No compound bows or compound crossbow prods are allowed. Additionally, bows may have no modern sights or release aids may be utilized.
Fletching must be security attached and not project more than ½ inch from the shaft.
Arrows may be constructed from fiberglass shaft (.25 in to .375 in) with a blunt (Baldar-style Blunt). It must also have an anti-penetration device at the back (nock) of the arrow area for safety.
Anti-Penetration Devices (APD) is attached at the base of the arrow shaft no further than ½ in from the end.
Must be securely attached with tape, glue or cable ties (covered with tape) that cannot be pulled off.
No arrows with failed or compromised blunts or APDs may be used.
Any sharp edges must be taped over.
Blunts must be securely attached with tape, glue, cable ties and covered fully with tape to cover any sharp edges.
Arrows must be no more than 28 inches from the back of the blunt to the nock.
Crossbow bolts and ballista forward weapons must be constructed of HDPE (Sil-o-flex or PEX) pipe.
Must be a minimum of 1 in inner diameter (1.25 in out diameter).
Fletching may be attached no closer than 1 in from the base of the bolt.
Nocks may be made at the base no more than ½ in or wooden knocks securely fastened may be added to the end of the bolt.
All heads must be firmly attached with tape or string (covered with tape).
A rubber stopper may also be used as long as it inserts into the tube a minimum of ½ in. It just be taped on security.
A tennis ball may be used and securely attached to the tube with both string and tape. Balls can weigh no more than 3 ounces. Do NOT cover the ball with tape so that it may keep its flexibility when striking a surface.
Padding must be added to whatever “point” is put on the bolt with at least ½” closed cell foam security taped.
Archers may shoot any opponent as long as there is a one arrow / bolt length between you and your target.
Archer – Counting Blows
Normal archery arrows count as a telling blow unless called by the recipient as substantial.
Crossbow bolts are considered telling blows if the target is more than 5 feet away or unless called by the recipient. If the target is within great sword distance, the blow is substantial.
Ballista bolts are substantial blows unless they strike an arm or leg or are glancing.
