THE LEGEND OF THE MISTY MOUNTAINS
The great mountains, often covered with layers of grey mist which rolled down along their sides obscuring the forests, stand dark against the sky. The people found the trees wide and tall, offering timber for castles and homes. The tribes settled among the forests and valleys where great rushing rivers ran clear. The mountains ranged for over two-thousand miles arching upward to the north where their snow-capped peaks dotted the landscape.
Beyond their physical grandeur, the Misty Mountains have long been shrouded in mystery and myth. Ancient tales speak of hidden caves where treasures lie untouched and of spirits said to guard the high passes. Generations have woven stories about the echoes that travel through the mist, believing they carry messages from ancestors or warnings of coming storms.
Over the centuries, these mountains became the backbone of the duchy’s identity, shaping the customs and beliefs of its people. Festivals marking the arrival of the first mist each spring are still celebrated, and songs recounting heroic deeds performed among the crags are passed down through families. The Misty Mountains are not just a natural barrier, they are a living presence, deeply interwoven with the hopes, fears, and aspirations of those who dwell in their shadow.
Among those treasures was found the “Heart of the Mountain”, a black stone which was precious to their metal smiths. Legends say the stone held a mysterious energy, its surface absorbing light and glimmering faintly in the misty dawn. With this stone, artisans forged tools and ornaments of remarkable strength, and it became a symbol of unity for the tribes, who believed its power was a gift from the mountains themselves. Passed from generation to generation, the Heart of the Mountain inspired tales of bravery and wisdom, and its legacy endured in the traditions and crafts of the duchy, binding the people to the land they called home.
The Duchy of the Misty Mountains was created with many Baronies united to form the first Solaran Duchy. As the people prospered, the Duchy gave rise to the Duchy of Antioch. The two duchies are still united for the Kingdom of Solara, and the people travel easily between the lands.
