THE LEGEND OF BIRKA
In a fertile plain where two great rivers meet at the foothills of the Misty Mountains, is the settlement of the Village of Birka. A market village full of life and wonder for travelers seeking shelter along their way.
And while these good folc enjoy a-viking, they are always happy to sit with travelers from distant lands, regaling and being regaled with stories of adventure and legends.
Birka Village was settled in year 19 A.A. with a small band of individuals who sought a better way of life. A place to call home. It was built on the ruins of a keep which was rumored to have once been the dwelling place of a great and terrible black dragon. The stone walls of the keep were rebuilt, ships constructed, and many a wonder of craftsmanship were created that few could compare.
It was one of the great cornerstones laid toward the building of the Kingdom of Solara. A land from which Kings and great folc of renown have come.
TODAY
Birka is located in Ashland, KY. Birka is based on the Swedish settlement of the same name in the time period around 1000 A.D. And while there are many who’s personas are Norse and Swedish, we welcome all. As in the days of the original Birka settlement, visitors from the known world traveled to their markets to both buy and sell their wares.
ACTIVITIES
Birka engages in all forms of marshal activities with heavy rattan combat, cut & thrust fencing, and some fun with foam weapons ensues.
With several Masters of Arts, folc have the ability to learn a variety of medieval arts and skills. Some of our activities are medieval cooking, leatherwork, metalwork, singing and bardic arts, dancing, calligraphy and illumination, and costuming to name a few.
With several Maisters of Service, folc can learn the courtly ways and join in the ranks to help continue to build the village. For without the folc willing to do the work, no good village or Kingdom can stand for long.
